An Invitation to Aesthetic Experience: The World of Ukiyo-e.
Ukiyo-e, the block prints and paintings that flourished during the Edo period (17th–19th centuries), exemplify collaborative artistry. Each piece was created by three specialists: the artist, who conceived the design; the carver, who engraved the woodblocks; and the printer, who applied the ink and transferred the image onto paper.
We invite you to share in this aesthetic experience. Though these works can be appreciated through various media, experiencing the actual materials in person – the texture of the paper, the subtle depth of the ink, and the delicate tactile quality of the printing – creates a profoundly different feeling.
